I might use a butane torch to avoid soot, but this looks interesting and fundamentally simple.

Yeah.
I haven’t came across the need to splice filament yet, but I’ve seen plenty splicer iterations. Maybe I’m just wasteful, but I’ve never had filament trigger the ‘out’ sensor even.
Interesting. I had not even thought of doing that but might have to think about it a bit more.
