Random thought… I have a handful of spare PC power supplies (all ATX) and was wondering how well they might work for a custom build’s power needs.

Being able to use the molex connectors just seems handy to me as opposed to using fixed or twisted power connections. I know the PSUs output 24V, 12V and 5V on various pins, and they’re all readily mapped out as well.

Has anyone experimented with this yet, what are your thoughts?

I’m running into an issue at the moment that may be due to using the wrong leads on the ATX PSU. The molex feeds do not have as much available wattage as the leads that power the motherboard. Likewise, it’s harder to find ‘female’ plugs for motherboard plugs so it’s a compromise no matter WHAT way you go.

@Mike_Miller that’ll be dependent on the PSU. There should be a white or yellow grid on the side that says what your leads are capable of for each PSU
