I’ve been agonizing on whether or not to purchase one. The biggest problem is that it has proprietary parts and if it breaks would not be able to get it fixed. What I like about most about my toys is that I can fix them myself or buy parts from multiple vendors. I do want to purchase a new 3D printer but it’s going to be a large volume printer. I have been toying with building my own but in the end it’s cheaper just to buy one. Oh the pain of enjoying your toys!

The only proprietary on the Simple Pro would be the folded metal parts. This is bare bones, so you add your own electronics and hotend, steppers, wiring, Z probe. All you are getting is the frame basically with the linear guides.

Can you throw any hotend on it or does it have to fit some constraints? I know they had engineered their own.

You would need to make some kind of a holder for it, but yes, any hotend will work.
