New SwitchDoc Labs ThunderBoard Lightning Detector Extender Kit.

New SwitchDoc Labs ThunderBoard Lightning Detector Extender Kit.

This kit, designed for OurWeathe (ESP8266 with Arduino IDE)r, allows the detection and reporting of Lightning up to ~30 km away. It comes with the ThunderBoard AS3935 based lightning detection board, an I2C converter and a 50cm Grove cable so you can mount your lightning detector far away from the noise generated by your computer.

Neat. For your next trick, triangulate the direction ^^;

@Bunny_Evans We need two units to do that! I am wondering about a set of directional antennas located at one place. 4 YAGIs and 4 lightning detector all at one location. Fun project

@John_Shovic 2 would give you two possible locations, you actually need 3, you could probably do that in a triangle with fixed spacing and some math.

But then you’d go insane and it would be plotting lightning strength on a map.

@Bunny_Evans , Yes, location and distance requires 3 for trilateralization.

What I was suggesting that we use directional YAGI antennas that we could look at the signal and see what direction it is coming from by comparing the strengths on the 4 directional antennas. Then you can use the strength of the bolt to place it on a map. At least on an area of the map.

@John_Shovic Probably at this point I should be “oh no, what have I started?”
