New K40 laser - I'm loosing my mind!

I hope it was helpful, was worried I posted quite a bit! Hehe

Thank you, I’ll do that next time I’m posting pics  xx

Wonderful to see that you were able to get the machine up and running and be able to get the mods installed. I cannot wait to see the wonderful things you will make with your new laser!

Hi guys - I have a quick question if anyone can help - I’ve ordered deionised water, is this safe to use as the laser coolant? Do I need to add anything to it? Thanks so much Donna x

  • little add on question / safety checker! Is this a good method for installing the interlock switch?

Do you need special wire due to the voltage etc? Sorry, I’m abit in the dark when it comes to electronics!

Thanks so much x

It looks like you found the thread already where we discussed deionized vs distilled water…

At least in the US, distilled water is available cheaply (about $1/gallon) in grocery stores.

The high voltage is on the power from the wall to the power supply (for you, 220-240V AC) and on the red wire from the laser power supply to the tube (about 20000V DC). The other wires are 5V (almost everything) or 24V (the stepper motors that drive the carriage around).

The wires that control whether the laser fires or not are 5V. Those don’t need special wire.

The first safety interlocks you want are for the door; to only fire the laser with the door closed. If you want to add a key you can, but don’t add a key instead of door switches; that would just be an illusion of safety in my opinion…

Ooo I missed that reoky - thank you! So DI water is fine and won’t arc the laser?

Great, Dave has some speaker wire he says will do the job, is this ok? (we’re putting the interlock for the door) … x

A key switch may prevent unauthorized use of the machine but that does not make the machine safe.

You should have a switch on the main lid and the laser compartment…

Post a picture of your laser power supply showing the connectors and we will tell you where to wire the switches into the system.

Amazing, will do, thank you  x

Here’s the pictures of the laser brains!

This is the wiring for the emergency stop button

You got an e-stop. That’s good.

See that small black jumper which connects the P and G pins of the power supply? That’s where you connect your safety switches.

If there is no continuity between the P and G pins, the laser can’t fire.

You can add as many switches in series as you like. E.g. you could add an interlock switch for the lid of the engraving compartment and a flow switch.

Since this is logic-level stuff (5 V and a few mA), you can use any switch you like. E.g. a tiny reed switch would also work as an interlock switch.

Brilliant, I’ll get Dave to look this over with me too - maybe take a few pics before we start cutting wires! Hehe … will these be ok to buy?

We connect the wire to these pins? x

Yes, P is (water) protect and G is ground.

You could also use any other ground, but this one is meant for this.

You need some JST (XH?) connector for this. However, you could also use two female Dupont jumper wires and secure them with hot glue.

The hot glue can be easily removed in the future with some 99.9% IPA. It creeps under it via capillary action and the glue comes off in one piece. It works pretty well. 99.9% IPA won’t damage the connector, PCB, cables, etc. It’s also used for removing flux residue from PCBs, for example. It evaporates completely if you wait briefly. It’s very convenient stuff. You can also use it to clean the optics (but not the acrylic window).

Amazing, thank you - we’ve ordered the bits so should get this in next week :+1: thanks for your help, I’ll post pics when it’s done  xx

You can also buy JST “pigtails” — usually 10-15cm long — in bundles from Amazon and AliExpress and so forth. Then you can connect those short wires to wires to the interlocks.

Great thank you - Dave’s going to take the lead on this and fit it in the week! All info has been very much appreciated :slightly_smiling_face: x
