Deflection increases as the cube of the arm.
I assume you mean “X axis” not “z axis”.
FYI @Darrell_n hasn’t logged in to makerforums at this point; this was an imported post from the Google+ community and he hasn’t joined us here as of this writing.
I have a 1000x1500 OX which is fine for what I use it for so far, but is noticeably flexible. I don’t think that doubling is extremely effective. At some point I expect to cut new plates to use a one-meter c-beam (8040) for the gantry to make it somewhat stiffer, but I still would be skeptical of using it for metal…
