Has anyone tried to slice and print one of the STL files from the new Smithsonian X 3D project? I couldn’t get it to load in Slic3r, and I’m still a newbie at using NettFab. The scans are extremely high resolution. The Blue Crab model shown has 2.6e+6 triangles.

Here’s an article: about it from “The Verge”:

Blender or Rhino: decimate

Honestly, for very high poly models, I’ve found KISSlicer works wonderfully where everything else will just choke and die.

For this type of work I would probably use 3dcoat to voxelize it so the model is clean and then export it out at 300k or so for printing.
