I found some time ago that you can create a nice thick and run free finish is you spray on the finish while it is turning at about 10 rpm. Of course, the stubby’s slow speed makes this possible. I typically put 8-10 coats of finish on using this method and the satin finish is my favorite as it leaves the wood looking natural.
Often there are times when I want to finish one piece while working on another. So I fabricated this rotary unit so that I can do the finishing off of the lathe.
Its made from a copy machine gearbox and some misc gears and belts I had around the shop…
