“you don’t cook pizza at the same temperature as you bake a cake” - and the same applies to 3D printing with different materials! Our second in the series “The science of…” with Polymer Technology lecturer Colin Hindle http://bit.ly/1ndFPaZ

I have a question: is there a cheap and easy method to measure the TG at home? Many manufacturers don’t list the spec, and it can change with the formulations and color.

hi @Stephanie_A as Tg is traditionally defined by the change in specific volume but most often the change in heat capacity is measured using DSC. Neither of these is practical for a home measurement.

However, for an amorphous polymer such as ABS the Vicat softening point is closely related to the Tg and it would be feasible to to build your own Vicat style setup using a domestic oven or hot plate. A temperature measuring device would be required but repeatability rather than accuracy would be important - you are interested in the differences between grades.
