Where does it stop?

Land of the free.

1st amendment + 2nd amendment == The Right to 3D Print and Bear Arms.

Moreover, I don’t see how this could be implemented in a way which couldn’t be reverse-engineered into a library of CAD parts for making weapons.

It came up on /r/shapeoko and I locked the post and told folks to write their legislators.

That said, imagine a workable/reasonable version of this legislation — felons, or persons convicted of misdemeanor domestic abuse who are barred by statute from owning or touching firearms are required to have an approval mechanism in place on their 3D printers and other CNC machines where before any part is made, their parole officer must review and then approve it for manufacture. In the absence of such a mechanism, they are not allowed to own such devices.

This has nothing to do with workable/reasonable legislation. The rules already exist at the federal level.

If you are an upstanding US citizen you can make your own firearms for your own use. If you’re a criminal you aren’t allowed to own firearms.
