Where do you all get Limonene for HIPS?

Where do you all get Limonene for HIPS? Can it be locally sourced (USA) or do I have to order it online?

I got mine from http://www.greenterpene.com/

Hmm… I was hoping for a local source so I can print out a dual extrusion object tomorrow. Maybe there are alternatives?

Not that I know of, maybe someone else has a better idea.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the link.

A big box hardware store Home Depot carries a product “natural orange” a D-limonene based degreaser. If you do not need a chemically or USP pure D-limonene try a local hardware store or cleaning supply store. If D-limonene is the main ingredient try a small bottle of degreaser. If it works on a test piece of HIPS there is your answer. Please let us know the results.

I bought some on Amazon for like $40 a gallon. It’s bought as a food additive, but beware, it’s really flammable, so it’s ground shipped. I store in in a flame cabinet at work. Haven’t gotten around to using it because I don’t know how yet. You could try a restaurant supply store.

http://www.amazon.com/Orange-Terpene-5-fold-Dilimonene-D-limonene/dp/B00E2VRW72/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1394045129&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=dimonene is what I’ve got. Did dissolves with it and it works great.

@Mike_Kelly_Mike_Make , that’s the same stuff I bought. Do you just submerge the part in it and wait? how many times can you use the each batch of it, and do you just pour into the garbage?

@Eric_Moy Yes I drop the part in to the limonene bath of sufficient volume to cover the whole thing. I would say you can use the same batch several times, basically as long as you still have liquid it can dissolve.

It’ll separate from the HIPS after a long enough time. So you could use a turkey baster or something to recollect the pure limonene from the hips/limonene solution. Though I’m not convinced using the limonene solution would hurt anything.

It seems like when it super saturates the hips drops to the bottom. I had a very large print with around 750g of hips, and it ended up forming a goop of hips at the bottom of the tub, so keep the in mind if you’re dissolving a lot, the goop will get into the part. Though smaller prints will float and don’t require much support.

You should check your local trash rules, but polystyrene and d-limonene are in lots of stuff so I can’t imagine it’s dangerous to throw in the trash.
