What’s the best way to switch from ABS filament to PLA filament, since they print at such widely different temperatures? Can I put my hot end up to 230C to melt the ABS, then put the PLA in and hit extrude in Pronterface until the color changes?
Yes,you can do it this way,some pla need 210C above to melt it.

Will this method work for switching filaments in the general case? Like, if I wanted to try out wood (http://www.lulzbot.com/?q=products/laywoo-d3-wood-filament-3mm), would I do the same thing?
I have not used wood filament before, I do not know does it will stick on ABS.
Let it totally cool down, then heat it to 130C. At that temperature you should be able to pull the filament back by hand.
