The Makeraser Smooths 3D Prints
A new startup offers something called “The Makeraser”. It’s a handheld tool that can smooth your unattractive visibly-layered 3D prints into beautiful smooth objects.

I don’t see a market for this. Anybody who’d actually use it can cobble together what they need after five minutes of rummaging through their house. And selling ABS juice? Seriously?

Thats what I was thinking. When making something for a maker, make sure that they can’t make it themselves.

Cos I can’t buy one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Sparco-Envelope-Moistener-Bottle-SPR01483/dp/B0006HVI5S/ref=sr_1_3?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1380907890&sr=1-3

For a buck 39 and fill it with acetone…

Oh and I primarily print with PLA :wink:

Yeah, acetone ain’t gonna do much there. Does anybody know what “other chemical” fits that bill with PLA?

Hahaha, “suspiciously dangerous acetone vapor chambers”? Really?

Simple precaution 1 - Don’t breathe over it while open or, if you’re very concerned, wear a respirator.
Simple precaution 2 - Don’t use near open flame, in a poorly ventilated area, or while smoking.

There you go, the “suspiciously dangerous” acetone smoother has now been made as safe as any other tool in a maker’s toolbox.

@Stephen_Baird
For a second there I thought you were talking about spray paint, or hair spray, or bug killer or wd40 or oven cleaner or…

@Pat_G I like how that little plastic bottle is “$18.66” before discount. Ooooh a 93% discount, I HAVE TO BUY THIS.

But really, selling ABS Juice to makers is like selling… something… that you can easily make to people who like to make things. Please pretend that was funny.

@Patrick_Ryan there are other solvents for PLA but they are even more dangerous to use. Look up tetrahydrofuran (derived from oranges and used as a natural cleaner/solvent). http://www.protoparadigm.com/blog/2013/06/vapor-smoothing-and-polishing-pla-with-tetrahydrofuran-thf/

@Shachar_Weis Oh it is funny But then there is the Cube using inkjet tactics for filament and flogging their own Cubestick. Its not the makers and early adopters they are targeting. :wink:

@Ross_Hendrickson Thanks for that. I think I’ll give the potentially explosive carcinogen and mutagen a pass… :slight_smile:

@Patrick_Ryan hence why I don’t use that stuff for PLA :slight_smile:
