I saw a variety of good examples here by @Andrew_Tuline ​.

And search for FastLED on http://Github.com, http://gist.github.com, http://pastebin.com, and other sites, and Google FastLED and you can find many more examples.

Oh, and Steven is a Vancouver local (woot!) and long time supporter of the Maker movement in town.

A couple of other folks with top notch examples (including lots of 2D) are Jason Coon and Stefan Petrick.

Cine-lights has some excellent code for music reactive patterns, and also combines the Neopixel library and FastLED library in one program, which is nice. (I think his code is based on code by other folks here, and then adapted for music reactive purposes.) . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epcx-l-fVVw
