Thanks to this blog post I finally learned how to generate DXF files in Inkscape which can then be imported into OpenSCAD to create extrusions.
It even works with text. This greatly enhances the variety of text objects I can create in OpenSCAD.

I like the trace bitmap, then you simplify using the node tool, then simplify to non spline objects. Makes cookie cutters out of anything.
