Smoothie for Ethernet/IP or EtherCat?

Has anybody thought about doing firmware for the SmoothieBoard that would allow it to act as an Ethernet/IP (by preference) or EtherCat industrial controller? The board has an awful lot of what one might want for that application. There are a lot of robotics scenarios where it would be just about perfect.

The Remora project( ) does it over SPI. Getting Remora working over the Ethernet interface has been talked about.
