Reaching for the stars 3d print statue

Starting design for a new decoration for my computer room. My first attempt at a single string tensegrity sculpture.

I recently saw several videos talking about a space mission extension program for the swift gamma ray detection satellite. It was the first mission I got to see. I wasn’t part of the mission but I got to see the payload bay and the launch. My introduction to the US space lift mission of the time. I had the privilege to work at Cape Canaveral for a few years. A little unknown fact is USAF had oversight for non-manned space launches. NASA only had control for manned missions. That changed with commercial space.

Initial idea is hands reaching for the stars. One male and one female hand. Used base meshes for the hand geometry created by rrealCakes found on Artstation.

Added some armature bones to pose the hands. In Blender the bones are called an armature. In Maya it called a skeleton. Different names for same function.

This is my starting point. Still have a bit more design work to finalize it.

Posed the hands a bit. Not sure if final.

Want a rocky base. 3rd rock from the sun.

A meteorite as the base for the tensegrity stand. The seed for the organic molecule chemistry for life.

Stills needs one or more elements.

Would be interesting if you floated the star using magnets.

That would be interesting but another complication. The star will be floating on the tensegrity line.

I still have to do some test prints to make sure it will work with this design. These pieces will not be connected except for the fishing line connecting them.

Well that tensegrity effort was a failure. lol

It does actually stand on its own using only one line but I am unable to add enough tension so it is incredibly floppy. I would need a much thicker line to add the required tension and not sure if it wouldn’t still be floppy.

So going to take a day and ruminate whether I will just glue the segments together for this design or re-design an entirely different stand for the star.

I am just going to glue it all together. The tensegrity feature just did not work for this design. Too floppy.

It is interesting that you only need a single string to make it work.

Glued up. I will paint tomorrow. Bought some texturedstone paint that I hope looks good on this model.

Three coats of a textured rattle can paint. Really cool textured feel and though not 100% sure on the color I will live with it. Once the VOC’s aren’t so overpowering it will go into my office.
