After an update on a recent Kickstarter I was presented with:

which while interesting, didn’t quite cross my threshold of “must have”, probably because:
- I don’t think the mechanism will have sufficient inertia to really be useful/have torque
- I want to see how the Fractal Vise works out when paired w/ a bench-mounted drill (and I’m probably going to go for the vertical mount version for that as an add-on)
I think this sort of design would be far more interesting if there was some sort of clutch mechanism to prevent backwards rotation, and even more so if there was some sort of integrated gearing so as to increase the speed of rotation when turning it — I suspect either would be challenging at this size in terms of engineering and material strength/machinability — that said, a design which incorporated both would be awesome for speeding through initial stages of hardware installs, and if one could incorporate a pair of gearing mechanisms, one which increased speed, the other which increased torque (with a neutral setting for direct transfer of rotation), this could be an absolutely game-changing tool.
Probably, it would have to be made in pairs — one for on, the other for off — the question of course is could there be such a mechanism with pair of nested/stacked/inter-working gears.

I can’t recall having seen anything applicable — other resources to examine? Or is my initial instinct that there is no Venn diagram for this when taking into account material limits/manufacturability/mechanical structures and so forth?
