One of the problems with desktop 3D printers is build area - the size of products they can make (often less than an 8" cube.) Designers are solving that by creating products that expand and practically assemble themselves. Want an example? Check out this chandelier. It was printed on a device the size of a breadbox.

Or, designers can print for assembly. For example, I remember a college friend of mine 3D-printed a large automotive wheel in 4 quadrants, and then assembled them together - was for a grad project
