Might be a silly question but does the router control the rotation of the drag knife? Or is it free spinning and reliant upon X and Y movements?

I may be wrong, but a drag knife is usually free spinning and the tip axis is offset from the shaft axis to allow the knife to follow the head motion with a slight lag to reorient the blade edge to follow the cut.
