Orange PLA

I have two rolls of orange PLA and they both suck! For some reason that escapes me neither wants to stick to the heated kapton. All my other PLA is just fine, but the orange stuff is a nightmare.

Does anyone else have problems with orange or is it just me?

I have pretty much given up on the stuff and archived it away.

I never had much luck with PLA on kapton tape. Painters tape or sanded glass seem much better for me.

I don’t print on kapton (anymore) but orange is 1 of my favourite colours to print.

I believe many people are successfully printing on to glass using the glue sticks on a heated bed. I also enjoy good success with orange PLA.

blue tape works well… glue stick/pva glue or hairspray work GREAT with a heated bed at 60-70c for pla (Personally, I use hairspray at 60c for PLA and 100c for ABS).

Everything else works perfect. It’s just the orange. Might try painters tape, but that hasn’t been overly successful in the past.

Some rolls are different, just need to experiment with them a little. Try making your first layer at a course resolution, something like 0.400mm or whatever your printer can handle. Try running your hotend hotter on the first layer also.

Glue stick is just so easy.

Hair spray

@Ben_Jackson I find a quick wipe down of the blue tape with alcohol makes it stick like crazy. Not soaking or scrubbing, just a quick wipe with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.

I have tried a number of different budget brands and each brand/color vary with what works best. Pla also absorbs moisture. It could be that the rolls sat for a long time and need to dry. Try drying a small segment and see if that improves at all.

I’ve experienced poor results with PLA and kapton tape. After switching to a simple PVA solution, I have not looked back. I use a “Boston round bottle” to mix, store, and distribute the solution. I use a foam brush to smear the solution onto my glass print bed. From time to time, I use too much glue, and I have to scrape the prints. Usually they pop right off at 40°C.

I’ve had enough trouble with modern orange pigmented PLA that I’ll only use it as a 2nd’ary filament on top of another.

Running it at 200 degrees C, it sticks well to other PLAs.

@Don_Grunloh I have had big humidity problems before but have solved that for everything but the orange. I did notice that when I last tried this there was still a heap of steam coming off it.

I use a large plastic storage container with 1KG of silica gel across the bottom. The box is sealed and the silica gel is recharged regularly.

It just seems that the orange is the one that still soaks up the humidity and won’t let it go. I was wondering if any else has found that orange is different to other PLA. Maybe it is something in that particular pigment. Maybe it is just 2 bad rolls (from different manufacturers).

@Woody_Williams That’s a great idea. Might try that.

seriously, try gluestick.
I use it with a non-heated bed and get perfect results. Apply it thinly and wait for the tackiness to go away, then print.
When it gets too thick on the bed surface, wash it off with warm water and apply a new coating.

@Roger_Waggener I already use it for ABS. It worked so well for the last ABS print the plastic actually broke off some glass from the plate. Need to buy some proper glass.

My orange works great. Try printing on blue painters tape.
