Ok question. I want to cut 1.5” thick wood for some of my carvings however there really isn’t enough room for travel. Would it work to shim the y axis to get the extra height or would that cause an issue?
I plan on doing the same thing. I wouldn’t think it would make a difference as long as the base is stiff. Know what
I mean? I have some old barn beams I want to work on so I’m going to need about 10-12 inches of extra space.
@Jamie_Wilson good time. Deep cuts are all about end mill selection. Just did a 2” thing on the Ox. It was a tight balance to run across the top on G0 moves but still get in to the pockets. Ended up using the 2 flute 3.175 straight flute we sell. But did have to move the spindle up the Z axis to do it. Moving that spindle may be easier than changing the mounts.
Yeah I suppose I could do that. I was trying to still be able to use my dust collection and if I raise the spindle then it won’t fit. It would be nice to have some taller gantry plates if that wouldn’t cause flex.
I have extended mine to 6” and flex at the table top is significant.
@Colin_Kaminski can you post a pic? I’d like to see it!
I am following Colin’s example, but hadn’t known about the top end flex. I just ordered my new pieces last week and they are just now shipping.
Knowing know about the flex, I may put my lower (new) C-Beams on their face (“C” side down, and then use the same brackets on the inside, and get some angle brackets for the outside, or center the lower “C-Beam” on the bottom, and angle brackets on inside/outside. I’ll also be adding limit switches as he did.
Also, I only see myself cutting wood, at least in the near future.
