Need some TinyG help folks.
Had the Y driver on my TinyG v8 overheat today, after it cooled down the axis only moves in 1 direction.

Restarted everything, same thing.

So now I am trying to move my Y motor to the 4th driver. I sent $4ma=1 but now when I jog the Y, the motor just energizes (respective green LEDs turn on and I can hear the hum) but no movement. Please advise.

Maybe one of the winding opened up, or wire lead opened?
The LEDs just sense voltage at the connectors, not current flow.

Do you have a spare motor to try?

I am of course assuming all the other $4 parameters got set appropriately as well.

It was the driver. I reworked a new one onto the board and now the motor moves in both directions.

Never occurred to me it could be the motor, that’s something I’ll test if I encounter this again.

No, I didn’t set anything else. The way I read it, just $4ma=1 should mirror existing Y axis settings onto port 4.

Ah so, you are good with a soldering iron.
Those heat slug packages are a bugger.
And, you have a spare driver but not a spare motor?

Switching drivers should have worked, but you do have to match all the $4 parameters to the $[whatever failed] motor settings (often $4pm=0 by default). The axis parameters need not be modified.

Enjoy

I would expect a (very fine gauge) motor lead wire to fail before a winding would fail as a general statement

And a rework station too. I found replacing the IC more enjoyable than trying to figure out all the $4 settings. PCB rework is fun!

These were Openbuilds Nema 23 motors on a 3040 with ballscrews. I didn’t imagine the steppers could burn out.

Lucky the corner store carries DRV8818’s

But seriously, I did have some. Of a driver that no other board uses.

If I thought you live in Akihabara, Taipei, or Shenzhen, I would believe that.

Ok, so my Y axis is moving now, but by the wrong amount. The config looks right. Maybe I missed one of the microstep pins in the soldering process. I’m going to try m4 again.
