Magnetic Edge Hold Downs

It’s nice with my new 50W laser that the honeycomb bed is steel so magnets stick to it. That makes it easy to use magnets to hold down your work pieces by placing strong magnets directly on top.

I’ve been using some very strong 60x10x3mm rare earth magnets I got off Amazon.

However, sometimes when you are working close to the edge of the piece, and you need to get it to lay flat, it’s not easy to get them positioned so they are out of the way.

What I’ve been doing is to cut a paper clip so I get 2 U shaped pieces and then sandwich one between 2 magnets so just the edge rests on the work piece. This works great on things like 1/8" plywood that usually has some small amount of warp to it.

For thicker things you stack magnets and/or bend a small z-step into the wire to capure the edge of your work piece.

I’m sure there are other ways to do this, but I’ve found this is easy and works for me. :slightly_smiling_face:

That’s a very attractive way to do it! :magnet:
