i2c will quickly make you long for the relatively speedy (especially once you factor in parallel outputs) ws2812 
– also, w/12-bit output, it’s a 50% increase on the amount of data to write for a frame. (I probably won’t start implementing support for 12/16 bit chipsets until I finish the RGBW/RGB16 work)
