It’s a perennial topic, but worth asking again from time to time!
I’m on the hunt for some basic, opaque PLA filament in 1.75mm in light colors – I will be creating molds from positives created from these colors so a little bit lighter (and non translucent!) surfaces are a bit easier to inspect, finish, and seal up, I find.
I’d love to hear suggestions from folks as to where they are finding white, grey, etc PLA that they are loving as go-to basic printing stock. I’ve been trying so many different suppliers, but several of the suppliers have been changing their sources, so I feel my information is a bit stale. (As is some of my spools of PLA, or the inverse of stale, despite my sealed boxes – should grab some more desiccant.)
I’d love a report or two on any filaments that you all have purchased lately!
I’ve had initial good results with JET brand ABS from Amazon, and I like the vibrant green and orange filaments, but my printing experience is limited with these.
A friend brought over some bright translucent red from amazon – and while the filament appeared to be a bit inconsistent for width, the tensioner on my printer handled it just fine and it printed well. But I must admit I was nervous for some reason about those amazon filaments. Glad to hear a few more reports about those!
@Clint_O_Connor @Matthew_Griffin Which printer are you guys using? I am fascinated with this tech and want to get started. Is your printer “hacker friendly” (in the traditional sense of the word)?
Solidoodle 3, 8x8x8 build volume for $799 ready to go is hard to beat. Like any tool, there is a learning curve, but I got this to use while I’m waiting for my big RigidBot and didn’t want to start by building one. My RigidBot is coming in kit form.
It is not open source hardware but it can be modified (voids warranty, I’m sure).
