I’m a member of this community solely because I find the potential of 3d printing astounding. I have no experience and only a general idea of how this stuff works. But, I was wondering if anyone has played with food items? It seems like it would be a relatively simple thing to modify the injectors and plate to work with candy or chocolate, seeing as how they readily melt and solidify.

What are the roadblocks to using edible media? What sort of crazy confection concoctions would you create?

Mmm Chocolate gears

It has been done. People have printed in cookie dough, chocolate, frosting, etc. At the university of Washington where I went to school, one class recently made gummy candies of themselves.

The RichRap Universal Paste Extruder seems to do pretty well with chocolate, and passably with some other foodstuffs: http://richrap.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/universal-paste-extruder-ceramic-food.html
