I think my A4988 drivers have blown on DLC 32 v2.1 board

Just got a two trees 4018 cnc from Aliexpress. Came with DLC 32 v2.1. No e stop switches and after initial testing, accidently drove y axis to end. After turn off and reboot. Have spindle control motor running but xyz just whine or hum on move commands with Candle. Dc supply stays at 24 volt so think it is the cheap A4988’s that came with it. Had seen some other comments on sites, where all three axes drivers had blown.

Has anyone experience of this?

No, but luckily they are cheap enough to find out if that is truly the issue.

Thanks Marty, already ordered some more and some DRV8255’s in case I can do a drop in without too much hassle.

A while ago I did a survey of boards that shipped with integrated trinamic drivers (better heat management than “step sticks”) Controller boards with integrated TMC drivers and it’s a wiki so anyone can do updates, but it hasn’t been updated for years. If you end up wanting better drivers, that might be a jumping-off point. Trinamics aren’t really that expensive on step sticks and don’t run particularly hot, so I would think they are a better replacement than DRV8255s. You can run them in a DLC32 but sadly not with UART control that gives you things like error on skipped steps. In DLC32 with TMC2208 @mugginsjm didn’t follow up with how well the TMC2208 drivers worked, but I assume would have if they didn’t work.

Thanks Michael. I had a quick look at the data sheets and see that the TMC2208 varies several aspects of power and step control and might involve both code and board mods. However, I’ll keep these in mind and see what happens with swapping drivers. I’ll probably do a post script when I’ve done some tests. Thanks for the link.

In step/dir mode they should be drop-in.

what @mcdanlj said and those mods are only if you want to take full control of the driver. They are still drop-in replacements for simple step/dir commanding.

Thanks dougl. I found it’s possible drop in TMC 2209 with reduced spec in a document on the MKS. So, i’ll bite the bullet and get some TMC’s in. Thanks for the feedback.

they are a night vs day difference from my experience.
