I just got word from one of our Australian customers that the AU customs codes contain the following:

8477 Machinery for working rubber or plastics or for the manufacture of products from these materials, not specified or included elsewhere in this Chapter
8477.59.00 PRINTERS, THREE-DIMENSIONAL

He continued to explain:
Further investigation revealed that there was no duty applicable on 3D printers imported from the USA. That means that printers with a value of over AUD$1000 would be charged 10% GST only. GST is charged on the total cost of the printer plus shipping.

I’m impressed that the Australian bureaucracy is cognizant enough to mention 3d printers specifically.

what’s your company?

I work at Deezmaker. We make the Bukobot 3d printer.

ah, nice.

To be fair, they do mention an awful lot of other stuff, and 3D Printer has been there since 2007 (I think).
