I hope this is the right place to ask… But is it possible to have a laser engraver with 3 axis, ie. xyz - I have xy; but need to modify it, in order to have the laser close to the cutting surface/engraving surface. Any help/suggestions appreciated! 
I suggest you go have a look in the K40 Community. Many people have created Z-axis tables (or you can purchase them) to achieve what you seem to want.
