I helped set up this Talks@Google talk with @Diego_Porqueras_Deez , designer of the BukoBot and Bukito 3D printers. (My own rig is a Bukito.) I was fascinated by his discussion of the engineering tradeoffs between different printer designs – for example, a direct-drive extruder requires heavier motors in the print head, which makes the print head itself heavier and thus requires stronger motors in the drive system, and so on. He also discusses different printer frame styles, different coordinate systems, etc.
Should be an interesting talk for anyone who’d like to know more about the process of making 3D printers!
