I am thinking about making a rotary device for pen engraving or making laser

I am thinking about making a rotary device for pen engraving or making laser cut pen shapes. Does the rotary movement in laserweb go greater than 360 degrees (more than one rotation) or move only within 360 degree range? For homing or endstops, I was curious if anyone uses those for rotary device or not and if so how did they implement them? Does anyone use an encoder to try to monitor position? I was thinking to be able to remove the pen from the engraver after one round and then replace it and do additional cutting or engraving and be able to align the design.

It goes past 360, just maps length to degrees. An encoder will be cool if any firm could take account of!
