Hi All,
I was reading this post : http://www.sparxeng.com/blog/mechanical/3d-print-orientation-effect-part-strength
And I was wondering if there is any software able to “search” for the best orientation. By best orientation, I mean the easiest/fastest orientation for a successful print OR the orientation that would make the piece stronger.

Does anyone know such software ?

@Nathan_Walkner Yeah, i love honeycomb for strong part. Still sometimes I struggle to find which orientation has more chance to end in a successful print. Especially when the shape is very complex, the best orientation is not always the more “logical” (for me at least).

I must admit I often use honeycomb (in Slic3r) just because it looks so cool when printing in translucent PLA

Autodesk has this “Meshmixer” accompanying its 123Design. It is supposed to make analysis of the structure. But it doesn’t really tell you which orientation to take, only gives you suggestions about structure, weight distribution, etc. so you can modify or add to the model. I’m unfamiliar with design process and 3D software so I can’t make the head or tail of what it says. But you may want to take a look.

@whackyhack Meshmixer automatically rotates the part for the best orientation that it determines. It doesn’t just do the analysis.

i always use rectilinear and i have found most of the times 40% is the sweet spot in strength is i need it.
