Hey guys,

I’m gathering up the parts needed for my CNC, and I could use some help with my controller set up:

Can someone tell me if I would need a braking resistor for my new CNC, and if so, how to calculate the Ohms needed for my 1.5 KW VFD? Also, where would be the most economic place to buy one? Also, do the sizes of my stepper motors affect the size of the resistor needed, or just the VFD? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I’m confused by your question.

Are you driving a multi-phase spindle? What braking resistor on what VFD on what motor?

As far as I know you need a stepper motor driver (not VFD) and never heard of a braking resistor on a stepper?

More info on the config your are trying to set up may help …

Spindle motor?
Spindle motor driver?
Stepper drivers?

Just the VFD. My apologies. I need to check the spindle & VFD specs.

I need to check the spindle. Here’s a photo of both and specs for the VFD https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2012/02/VFD15-22.pdf

I will be using a smooth Stepper controller

Technical Parameter of 2.2KW Water-cooled Spindle motor
Spec:80215mm(Middle body Diameter 80215mm)
ER20 collet chuck water-cooled
