Hey all, is anyone here making their own filament?

Hey all,
is anyone here making their own filament? Can you share where you buy the resin (pellets) and how much does it cost (including shipping) ?

Thanks !

I don’t make my own filament but I have considered it. Your question though is more mundane  My guess is that pellets, which are used in the injection moulding industry, are sold more factory to factory, rather than in retail. Have you considered consulting a business directory and looking up Injection Mold Supplies? I’ve worked with these guys (http://www.westecplastics.com/) on occasion (they actually manufacture injection molded parts) but asking them where they get their pellets might be a good start. If you can create a relationship with someone who uses pellets you might be able to ‘piggyback’ on their orders for your needs. I did this with my dentist for mold making supplies :-).

Yup, I’ve made around 200kg so far (I also created the Filastruder). ABS is around $4.50/lb shipped, PLA around $4/lb shipped. Here’s some suppliers: http://www.soliforum.com/topic/4195/polymer-suppliers/

As usual, shipping to Canada more than doubles that price, making an investment in an extruder not economical. I need to find a local source.

If that was a criteria, why not mention it in the original post? We aren’t mind readers.

More fun this way? I forgot? One of those.

Well, you’re mistaken about it being double the price to Canada. $6.9/lb shipped for ABS, $6.5/lb shipped for PLA. That’s less than a third of the cost of shipped filament as far as I can tell.

I don’t know of any Canadian sources that are cheaper than that.

Or just check Ebay … http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-lbs-MG94-ABS-Pellets-for-3D-Printer-Filament-FREE-SHIPPING-/131349389517?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e9508a0cd

@Shachar_Weis try alibaba or aliexpress you can usually haggle your way to a better price when promising a buying relationship based on product quality.
