Hi digital sculptor here. I was reading the article on the production of Adam savage’s costume of Ackbar. When I saw the girls sculpting in clay at the very bottom pics I got to wondering. Has anyone ever created a machine to make an automated subtractive sculpting machine for mold making from a 3d obj.ect file?

tl;dr Has anyone ever thought of or made A subtractive clay cnc like machine?

Are you talking about a CNC mill? While those don’t sculpt, which is a shaping process (neither additive nor subtractive), they can mill just about any mold shape from just about any material.

Cars manufactures have been using 5 axis CNCs to make the rough shape of the car but still needs fine tuned by hand the old fashioned way
