Has anyone tried building a 3D scanner?

I’ve seen several plans, but nothing that that looked like a “must build”.

Seems interesting.

It does seem pretty easy to make, but what are the results like? The examples don’t look so great.

I like the Atlas/Cyclop’s hardware design the best, even if they use a tricky to find bearing. It looks like something that could last.
I can’t find where to get the shield that drives the Cyclop. Most of the other designs seem t use similar ideas(IO for lasers and a stepper driver) so a universial hardware board would be great to see…
The BIG thing however is software… Except for the at Atlas(RapPi GPIO vs Arduino) , it looks like they can all can use same hardware.
But what does the best job? What is the easyest to use? This I don’t know.

@Matt_Smith Hello, I’m the builder behind the Sardauscan.
you are right, the first hello kitty scan was not great, in the first article, but i’ve made many improvement in the software since. you can see a actual scan of the hello kitty in the instructable. the stl is entirely generated by the software, no external software used. but if you prefere a more sofisticated software to reconstruct the mesh, you can export the pointcloud. ( Be aware that the calibration with 4 laser can be a big challenge )

Just spent $30 on a big bearing, a ‘cnc shield (That with minor mods becomes a ‘scanshield’’ and some line-lasers. I have leftover motors from my printer. I’ll post my results in about a month when the parts show up and I have a chance to build it.
Hopefully the same hardware platform will work across most of this software with only minor changes.
