Guys, has anyone experimented with PVC filament?. A friend haves an industrial filament extruder that has been off for a year and we can start trying to make 3dprinting filament. We have tons of pvc on the warehouse…

I think @nop_head has tried some.

Sounds good. Pvc is accually allowed in food making. For example: The structure of large cakes is usually made out of PVC

Gotta watch out for overheating it. PVC can give off nasty fumes when heated.

Any plastic can release tons of crap when overheated :).

I might give it a go and see where it takes us. Also, I might add a bird cage next to the printer (with a proper bird), like in old mines

Chlorine gas is more than “nasty fumes”. My understanding is that it’s been repeatedly determined to be unsafe to print.

Thanks @Whosa_whatsis , I was fairly sure it was a bad idea, but didn’t recall exactly what it put out. Maybe if you run the printer outdoors, far from yourself and others. Still seems like it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

There’s been quite a bit of controversy about PVC used in healthcare and building products, mostly owing to the nastiness of some of the stuff it contains. For example, PVC needs stabilizers (unlike other plastics I think), and lead-based compounds are still often used. People flip out and stop thinking whenever lead comes up, but here’s a non-hysterical link about it: http://www.pvc.org/en/p/lead-stabilisers

Vinyl can also contain other nasties, like cadmium, phthalates, etc. To make a long story short, I wouldn’t use it for filament because the vapors would likely be extra bad to breathe.
