Got my filastruder kickstarter kit and successfully 'struded last night,

Got my filastruder kickstarter kit and successfully 'struded last night, though it’s clear I need to run it more to get the junk inside the pipe out before I have clean filament. My short initial test shows fairly consistent width, but slightly wider than 3mm. That could be due to my drilling of the plug.

Please post some video and keep us updated as I’m interested in getting one but wanted to make sure it worked first

Ok, will report back as I test.

Why did you have to drill the plug?

They didn’t supply all plugs drilled. If you didn’t specify a size you get to drill it yourself. I thought I had, but who knows. I used the drill press at Crash Space (local hackerspace) last night. Anyway, I’m hopeful that the extra .3mm doesn’t matter. It is probably more important for it to be consistent than exactly the right size, since the slicer should compensate if I give it an accurate filament diameter. I hope.

Awesome.

What did you use for the plastic you fed it?

A combination of finely chopped bad prints (white abs), and the white abs pellets they supplied. The instructions say to run for 6 hours to get the impurities out, but I’m not convinced I have enough to do that.

If you don’t want to replace this plug and you plan on making most of your future filament, you could widen your hotend a bit.

As long as the barrel going into your hotend will accept the larger filament, you should be just fine. You’ll need to make adjustments in your software to compensate for the additional plastic coming out of the nozzle.
