You are much better off going with a powered USB hub for the BBB

“Much” better off? How so? I would think that if I can avoid an extra cable (especially a power cable), that’s a better path, no?

With this USB-powered hub, I am able to run the BBB with a keyboard and optical mouse, in addition to powering (via the USB hub) a Leonardo-compatible Arduino board.

I have heard that people have issues drawing too much power off of the BBB’s USB port. Perhaps that is only if the BBB is powered through the USB. I guess if you are powering it through the DC jack (which I assume you are), then there would be enough power to go around.
