Needing an external JTAG/SWD programmer is a real downer, some simple bootloader that worked over the uart would improve accessibility, with jtag left for the advanced user.
I think once the dust settles the ESP8266 and ESP32 will still come out ahead, the support curve and wonderful community that has formed will keep it alive and well!
