Hey guys I need help.
I’ve looked at the simplify3D troubleshooting guide, but they don’t have this one on there.
How can I get rid of those first layer scars?

I’ve tried adjusting the live z adjust but with no success.

I’ve tried a higher temperature also no success.

And I’ve tried adjusting the flow with also no success.

Also tried printing slower, also no success

My first layer height is set in software at 0.15mm, 200°C hotend and 55°C bed.
It is a prusa i3 mk2
Do you have any ideas?

You should always print with a first layer that is fairly thick. My first layer default is .3mm on all prints, even if I’m doing .05 layers for the rest. The extra thickness helps adhesion and will most likely solve your issue. Think about it this way- .3mm gives you a little bit of play for the plastic to spread out if you are too close to the bed. .15 gives you half that space. Up that first layer height in S3D and still do a live z adjust. I used to get that when I was too close.

Also good choice on starting with Simplify. Really good software.

@Griffin_Paquette  thanks I’ll try that
Btw I reduced the flow to 50 and it looks great. But I’ll see what’s better

You should never do that, not to 50% at least. Reducing the flow 5% is fine but don’t use it to fix an issue due to layer height. Reducing it generally lowers layer adhesion. The fact that reducing the flow makes it look better indicates that you are too close.

@Griffin_Paquette it already looks better. :slight_smile:
Still one or two scars but am still adjusting the live z

Excellent! Post a couple pics when it finishes!

@Griffin_Paquette don’t look at the first part…
It is perfect :slight_smile:
Thanks!

@Griffin_Paquette BTW, for small details I’ll have to reduce the speed or will it stick to the bed even at 24mm/s?

I print at 60mm/s for almost everything (30mm/s and no active cooling for the first layer) and that’s at .1 layer height. Occasionally the first layer will look rough but the second pass smooths it all out. You look set though, well done!

I print 30mm/s first layer and no fan as well. As long as you give the bed a wipe with some rubbing alcohol before you print it should stick really really well. Still a little too close to the bed I think. Do some smaller tests after this print to get that first layer perfectly smooth on the top without it being pressed down on the bottom. It’s though.

You are either over extruding or to close to the bed. If the rest of the print is not over extruded, you are too close. Just reduce flow (like you already did) or adjust the printhead further away from bed depending what is the case.

No print fan is definitely a must, if mine is left on or I forgot to disable for the first x layers, I can almost always be guaranteed a failed print…
