Finally to start using filament off the reel (up until now I just had small amounts that I fed from a hook) and I’m wondering about storage.
Since loading my printer is kind of a hassle, I’d like to just leave the reel attached once I get it loaded but since its PLA I’m wondering if it needs to go back in the bag when I’m not using it?
I guess it depends on the humidity. and maybe dust.
If its not overly humid, just leave it be and see how it behaves…
What would the acceptable humidity range? Maybe I need to build a “dehumidor”
Snip off a few inches, measure the diameter (or weight if you have something really accurate) and stick it a bottle of water for a few days. Pull it out and measure again.
I’m in the Boston area and left a roll of PLA out for over a year. It was fine.
Cool, I’ll experiment with leaving some out for a few days @Dave_Durant in the laboratory and see if it changes much, thanks for the tip!
I keep my filament in its plastic bags as long as possible. Once it is hooked up it is out in the open on a makeshift lazy-susan mod. I’ve gotten a few jams (like 2) from dust that has gotten on it and will be rectifying that problem in a better manner later.
