Eeks. Help. Walled away from a normal print to come back with an exploded extruder. Is my extruder toasted? what to do. What to do.

Ouch. My guess is toast :frowning:

To me, it looks like the nozzle and the feed tube came loose, and it got filled up by melted filament, it might be able to be cleaned out and tightened back up?

Can you pull the red sock off the hot end and post another photo of it? At first pass it does look like it leaked from a loose tip and pushed its way out of the top (after the bottom got clogged). It’s probably fixable as long as the plastic didn’t make its way into PTFE tape that wraps around the ceramic heater and thermistor.

Does it still heat up? If so, you might try setting it to 120-150C (something to make the plastic soft but not soupy or drippy) and pulling/wiping off as much as you can with a soft cloth.

It no longer heats up. My extruder motor is no longer functioning. Other motors are working. I will try to remove the red sock and post another pix. I appreciate any suggestion. Thank you.

E3d upgrade time?

I can click the Home button and the motors will start homing but I cannot move any of the motors using the move buttons within repetier. This might be because I have unplugged the thermistor of the hot end.

@Eclsnowman Maybe, depending on whether printrbot support will be able to help me out.

@Mark_Rehorst potentially but it wouldn’t be my fault since the hot end comes pre-built

Is this a new printer? We would be happy to replace if it’s our fault! Just fill out a ticket and explain what’s up.

I did file a ticket. Yes it is brand new. I got it in the mail less than 5 days ago :(.

@Brook_Drumm I love that you are a owner and maker who lives in the trenches with the rest of us. You must not sleep… You are everywhere

You should be able to move upward. I agree pull the red sock off carefully. If you can get the gantry up off the bed, then a needle nose plier can be worked around the red sock loosening it from the plastic. Once I’d done that I could pull the sock down to see what’s going on. It sure looks like it leaked high, not pushed up from the nozzle thru the sock.

@Dat_Chu I have a spare Ubis hot end if you want. You can give me the new one when it shows up.

@Anderson_Ta Thank you for such kind offer Anderson. I will let you know once I heard back from Printrbot.

I tried pulling the red sock off yesterday but it is stuck beyond pulling. So I used a soldering iron with a clean tip and carefully melt away the plastics at the top and the bottom. At this point, the red sock is still unpullable. I start trying to slice the sock open and can now see there is plenty of plastic filament ooze between the red sock and whatever is inside.

ABS or PLA. If abs you could soak it in some acetone to melt the plastic away.

PLA.

makes life a bit harder then

@Dat_Chu email me your ticket number and I’ll take care of it - brook(at)
