E3D Watercooling…
In trying to silence the beast, I came up with this.
Since my printer is way too big, and my motors need constant active cooling, I’m going to make mine watercooled, instaed of all those noisy fans. The steppermotor-cooling is simple enough, with standard 40mm cooling blocks, but for the hotend I needed to find a solution.
This is what I came up with.
The pump is low noise, and one big fan will produce a lot less noise than 4 small fans. The fan for the heat-exchanger is also used for airflow around the electronics.
@Mark_Rehorst similar to pc liquid cooling, its much easier to find larger, quieter fans and they often can spin at lower speeds when cooling a radiator than when cooling a part directly.
I didn’t believe it until I got an all in one CPU cooler, better performance at half the noise. I have been converted.
Great work. What secures the hexagon potion in place? Just the pressure from the O-rings?
Good work! The o-ring design makes for easy repairs and simplifies constitutions.
I wonder how small this could be made, hopefully at least as small as the origional heatsink(This would also keep down weight, water is heavy!). It seems like there is still a lot of material that could be removed, maybe with some internal fins/ridges at the same time.
@Mike_Kelly_Mike_Make it looks like you put the hexagon section down from the top and it stops at the ridge set into the bottom of the heat-sink block. (There is a matching ridge in the bottom of the hex section.)
@Mike_Kelly_Mike_Make Yup, just the pressure from the o-rings. And at the bottom the inner part is wider, so the jacket can’t move in that direction.
@Electra_Flarefire I could have made it a lot smaller, but I didn’t have smaller o-rings. And the aluminum was lying around, so…
@Rien_Stouten now those are great points!
I ended up replacing the stock fan with a Delta branded one on my e3d and now it’s the quietest part of the machine. But this design would be great for heated build chambers.
@Electra_Flarefire Ah, yes, I forgot to mention that. A heated build chamber is the ultimate goal.Sometimes I forget the reason for doing things.
