I have connected a US plug to a European mains socket, or actually a triple socket of a European extension lead.
My son has planned a trip to Japan and for charging his phone and that of his girl friend during his stay, they needed something like this:
I did not have a US plug without a ground pin and used a Dremel to cut the ground connection off the plug.
Now, to be sure that this is going to work, can anybody tell me if this is going to fit all US/Japanese wall sockets?
Are the dimensions of an non-grounded plug the same as the remaining part of this modified one?
EDIT: Moved to Electronics, maybe a better choice than Community.
Seems like a sensible quick solution; I think the Live/Neutral spades are totally identical between earthed and non-earthed US plugs; I’ve certainly used non earthed US plugs in earthed sockets many times.
The US socket/plug is, however, a lousy design. Tell your son to take care when pulling it out, the spades can be quite exposed before contact is lost; this is why many US plugs have a round guard at the plug end.
