CNC Router - Free/open-source designs

Hey gang -

I’m interested in trying out some 3D relief designs on the CNC router, and trying to find a good source/community of open-source designs (similar to Codeberg, GitHub, etc).

What sites would you recommend for this?

A few example files I would be interested in

  • Animals: Birds, horses
  • People: Hands, faces, eyes
  • Home / kitchen / utility: Cutting boards, personal organizers
  • Topographical relief maps

Likewise, I would like to post my own design files available for others to use & adapt (currently, I’m thinking to share them on Codeberg, but I would prefer to share them in a community where makers could easily find them, and there’s already a “center of gravity” of community content).

I’ve been bookmarking free SVG sites, but those don’t tend to have the 3D stuff.

What do you suggest?

Thanks!

Head over here, there is a lot to go through.

You can also search for Oscar here on the forum. He has some great information on creating 3D files for CNC and 3D printing

The good sites I used to know about have all closed down years ago but you are more than welcome to use any of my patterns that I have shared. I only ask that the patterns themselves not be sold but whatever you make with them are yours to do as you please.

I normally share the files as greyscale height map image patterns. Both for size and my convenience. This is another viable format for bas relief models. Each pixel location is the x,y location and greyscale confers the z data. You can use multiple different programs to convert them to STL or other format. I like Blender.

But I always encourage everyone to learn the basics of CAD, 3d modeling to really get the most out of their machines.

You are also coming in at an amazing time. It is shockingly easy to make good bas relief patterns using the new AI tools.

For your practice. I generated this image using Flux0.1 Schnell image generator.

Prompt: galloping horse, bas relief, no background, photo-realistic, high detail

My favorite AI height map generator is Marigold but there are probably dozens now.

Using Blender post processing I got this:

Here is the height map image pattern that I made.

Thank you @HalfNormal and @Oscar !

I was asked what this pattern would look like carved.

So I carved it.

Glad to see you’re not horsing around!

I was raring to go at the gate.

@Oscar That video you shared earlier is helpful.

Can you talk through the CNC-side of the workflow?

Once you have your STL file if will depend on what CAM/controller system you are using.

I am afraid I will not be much help.

I use a Carvewright, which is a proprietary closed cnc system. Not a lot of help for normal cnc users.

I have a second cnc but I am still learning the software VCarve Pro. So I am also a total rookie at it.
