Hola fellow makers -
I ordered some round-tip bits, which ought to arrive soon - the idea is to experiment with some 3D! Like a topographical map, an animal (kitty!), etc.
What tool-stack do you recommend for that?
Recently I’ve been using Debian Linux /Inkscape / Kiri:Moto / Universal Gcode Sender (UGS). That’s been good for my use case of 2D shapes etched into wood - text, shapes.
A lot of people have mentioned how cool 3D maps in wood would be. Also, I’ve got a potential client who wants sort of a rectangular tray with rounded insides - which I think could be completed with a large rounded bit and/or “3D” bits.
I haven’t even looked into greyscale depth maps, and how to get them into 3D models which could be used in Kiri:Moto or other tools.
Would love to hear y’alls thoughts and ideas!
Gracias!

As a quick side note: Last week, I moved the CNC gear to my apartment buildings social room, and had a free “engrave your thing” workshop + pizza event. The idea it just show people what’s possible, and get some local clients. An issue I had was there’s no internet there - so I couldn’t use Kiri:Moto as I typically do (web browser). I believe it can be installed locally. But its a good reminder to angle towards an open-source and non-internet dependent stack. Could be a separate thead, but putting it here for musing sake, to see what you all suggest.
