Anyone have any suggestions on the best chemical(s) to bathe stainless steel in to polish it/remove fine dust? Specifically putting it in a a chemical bath without rubbing it with a towel or anything. Just letting it sit there for a specified(?) time.

Maybe not so much a chemical, but an ultrasonic cleaner maybe…

@ThantiK only option is a chemical bath. We dont have an ultra sonic cleaner

@ThantiK If an ultrasonic, do you have any suggestions on what chemicals work best? SS303 is the material.

Do you want to actually dissolve dust and contaminants or just rinse it really well? Limonene is a good degreaser, vinegar could work ok for taking off scales and such. Google “pickling stainless steel” for some acid type options.

By the way, avoid hydrofluoric acid like the plague no matter what anyone tells you, that stuff is sixteen kinds of bad.

More towards rinsing it well, but it appears that it can be polished better to remove dirt. Polished it with a paper towel to see what the effect would be and the paper towel got just a tiny bit darker. So some dust/dirt is evident. It seems that it was polished better than what it looks like.

I would try a spray-and-buff with something like windex or orange-oil based cleaner and paper towels for a first attempt. No point in big chemical baths if you don’t need it.

It’s multiple pieces, so not able to rub them all :frowning:

Little difficult without knowing the chemical composition of the dust/deposit.

I’m wondering if salicylic acid would work, as it’s a good dissolver of silicates (sand/dirt/dust?) and it rates a B on the chemical resistance scale.

Disclaimer: I have no practical experience in this field, I’m completely fucking theorizing here. But it might get you in the right direction…

Seems like we might get one of these as it appears to be useful to clean: https://www.amazon.com/MAGNASONIC-Professional-Ultrasonic-Eyeglass-MGUC500/dp/B01EM5BYGC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1496792434&sr=8-3&keywords=ultrasonic%2Bcleaner&th=1
