I’ve been working on a DIY 3D printer build and recently completed the X-axis assembly. The goal of this project is to build a fully functional printer on a low budget while still maintaining decent print quality and mechanical stability.

So far, I’ve focused on making the X-axis as rigid and smooth as possible because it directly affects print accuracy and layer alignment. I used commonly available components and tried to keep the design simple so it can be replicated easily.

My main focus in this build is:

  • Stability during fast movement

  • Reducing vibration and wobble

  • Keeping the cost low without sacrificing too much precision

I’m documenting the full process step by step, starting from mechanical assembly and moving toward electronics and firmware tuning.

Next steps will include:

  • Z-axis alignment

  • Bed leveling system setup

  • Wiring and control board installation

  • First calibration prints

I’d appreciate feedback from experienced builders—especially on improving rigidity and reducing backlash in DIY setups without increasing cost too much.

Looks decent. But hard to say with only this axis. It looks like you are moving a lot of mass though.

Keeping it light as possible will help with print speed, and can help reduce other problems that occur at higher speeds.

Most newer printers seem to be using linear rails instead of smooth rods. But I can understand your goal of keeping the cost down might require this.

Also, at around 3:36 it looked like there is a little bit of slop in the carriage. Might be negligible.

What about the performance? Did you print anything with it?

I would stick lock washers on all the bolts/screws that have nuts.
